John Presper Eckert was born in 1919 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He wanted to attend MIT for college but his mother did not want him to move far away, so his father lied and said that they could not afford the tuition. Instead, he went to the University of Pennsylvania's Moore Engineering School. When he found out about his parent's lies, his grades dropped severely. However, Moore still earned his master's in electrical engineering. He then taught at Moore and became friends with John Mauchly. This friendship resulted in the creation of the ENIAC.
